Summer is in full swing and it's hot and humid where I live in South Carolina. Kathy here today to share sun printing with you using Melissa Frances laser wood embellishments and Art Anthology Minx Shimmering Inks and Colorations Sprays. I experimented using both raw canvas and mixed media paper. I created this summery sun printed canvas and I have a tutorial showing you how it was made.

Sun Print Tutorial
Supplies
Raw Canvas Fabric 8" x 10" or larger
Strathmore Mixed Media Paper 11" x 14"
Spray Bottle of Water
A Sunny Day
Step 1
The Background
Place the canvas on a mat for easy transport. Saturate the canvas with water using the spray bottle.
Spray Guacamole Colorations Spray and brush Bankroll Minx onto the lower part of the canvas. Add water to spread the color around if needed.
Spray Waimea Bay Colorations Spray and brush Panache and Stargazer Minx to the top using the same method.
Step 2
The Technique
Place wood veneer pieces onto the canvas and put the whole thing in the hot sun. Let it dry completely in the sun with the wood pieces in place.
It may take over an hour depending on where you live. The sun will lighten the covered areas.
Step 3
Adding Details
Add some painted details by splattering pink and orange "flowers" on the green using a fan brush.
Add green grass using Art Anthology Leaf Sorbet and the edge of a plastic gift card. I also painted three strips of canvas using Leaf Sorbet and Guacamole Colorations Spray. Once they dry, sew them onto the bottom part of the canvas.
Step 4
The Embellishments
Paint the butterflies with orange and white paint and let dry.
Spray the bicycle with French Toast and Sand Castle Colorations Sprays.
Paint the bird with green and orange paint and highlight with black marker. Stamp the butterflies with black ink and color the body black.
Step 5
Putting It Together.
Glue the sun printed canvas to an 8" x 10" burlap canvas.
Glue the embellishments to the canvas.
Hammer black tacks into the sides of the burlap canvas at one inch intervals.
I also added a little strip of music paper to show the bird singing.
I also did this technique using mixed media paper that holds up to lots of water.
Add lots of wood veneer embellishments randomly and set in the sun.
What I learned by using both canvas and paper for sun printing is that using mixed media paper creates more detail.
